Pakistan condemns ‘heinous terrorist attack’ on church in Jordan

Date:

Pakistan on Saturday strongly condemned “the heinous terrorist attack” at a funeral procession in a church in Jordan’s Karak governorate, which resulted in “the loss of several precious lives, with many injured,” the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement.

A day earlier, seven people were killed and 34 injured when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at Hamoud Church in Jordan’s Karak governorate, in a rare attack on the country’s Christian minority.

“Pakistan extends its heartfelt condolences to the government and the people of the brotherly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” the FO said. It particularly extended Pakistan’s condolences to the bereaved families, “on the loss of their loved ones.”

Reaffirming that it “stands in firm solidarity with the brotherly people of Jordan in their fight against terrorism,” the FO also reiterated Pakistan’s “strongest condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

After the attack, Interior Minister Mazin Al Farrayeh described the assailants as “extremists”, but said it was too early to establish links to known groups. Meanwhile, an eyewitness told state-owned Al-Mamlaka that a vehicle arrived carrying the gunmen, who fired continuously for five minutes before fleeing the scene.

Between 150 and 200 people were inside and around the church at the time, the witness said, adding that most of the victims were aged between 50 and 70.

King Abdullah visited Karak hours after the shooting and vowed the perpetrators would face the “harshest retaliation”, warning that attempts to divide Jordanians would fail. Jordan’s prime minister said the attack was the result of “terrorist extremist blind thinking”.
